For men who need more than $25,000 to purchase Viagra or other drugs for erectile dysfunction, the cost of one of the most widely prescribed drugs is too much to cover the required Viagra, a new study has found.
The analysis of data from a large database of prescriptions for erectile dysfunction drugs found that most of the drugs prescribed for the condition were not reimbursable because they do not contain active ingredients that are needed to achieve the desired effect.
“Many men with mild symptoms of erectile dysfunction do not want to be reimbursed for their treatment,” said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Public Citizen Center for Health Policy, which studies health care costs.
The researchers also found that the drugs most commonly prescribed by men with ED were not reimbursable for any of the medications in the category, including Viagra, Levitra and Cialis.
For the most part, the drugs were prescribed to men who needed the least money to pay for them, but it can be hard to determine how much the drug is costing them. In fact, the FDA is now reviewing the data.
More research is needed before it can be concluded that the drugs are not reimbursable for the most part.
“The problem is that there is currently no evidence that the price of one of these drugs is too high,” said Dr. David Schreiner, the study’s lead author.
While the price of the drugs may have increased dramatically over the last decade, the study authors said, “people do not realize that the cost of the drug is high.”
The most common use of drugs for erectile dysfunction is as an aphrodisiac, or “the little blue pill,” said Dr. John P. Masek, a urologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, who led the study.
The researchers compared the cost of Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and other drugs to that of the average adult, age 18 to 49.
Viagra was the most expensive drug in the study, with $2.06 to $2.13 per pill and Cialis was the least expensive, with $1.25 to $1.31 per pill.
“It’s a very expensive drug,” said Masek, who is a member of the scientific advisory committee that is reviewing the study.
Viagra and Cialis are prescribed to men with erectile dysfunction, including a condition called impotence, or inability to get or keep an erection long enough to have sex.
It is also prescribed for men with diabetes, a condition that affects blood sugar levels, and for those who are at a high risk for the condition.
While Viagra and Cialis are not reimbursable for most of the drugs on the market, it is not always clear how much the drug costs in the United States, and the FDA has yet to determine how much the drugs cost.
The analysis of data from the FDA’s most current and most recent clinical trials found that, in most cases, the drugs were not reimbursable for the most part.
In a report published in the September issue of the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, a team of doctors, researchers and scientists analyzed data from more than 20 studies on ED medications and concluded that the drugs were not reimbursable for any of the medications in the category, including Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
The drugs included in the analysis were all available over-the-counter and were the most commonly prescribed and sold in the United States.
The drugs were found to be the most expensive, but the drugs are not reimbursable for most of the drugs on the market, because they are not reimbursable.
